The Schleswig Leader (Schleswig, Iowa)

DEATH CLAIMS A PROMINENT CITIZEN

Another of Crawford county's respected citizens answered death's call and has passed to the Great Beyond.  Mr. John Ehler, died at his home here in Schleswig, Tuesday, May 8, at 5:30 p.m.  Several years ago Mr. Ehler suffered a severe attack of flu and since then his health has been failing.  Last fall the doctors advised a change of climate and he spent the winter in Colorado.  This change seemed to benefit him for a time but after his return several months ago, he began to fail again, and nothing the doctors could do seemed to help him.  Two weeks ago an attack of pleurisy confined him to his home for a few days but after this attack he was able to be out and around again and was even able to attend to some of his business matters.  Sunday he was again confined to his bed with a compilcation of diseases and pneumonia.  Monday his lungs were tapped to relieve the conjestion and this brought a temporary relief.  Tuesday an operation was deemed necessary, but his condition was so weakened that he was unable to
The life record of Mr. Ehler is an admirable example of success attained by one who started empty-handed and gained a position of ease and comfort through his indomitabe energy and resourcefulness.  He was a native of Germany, born on the Island of Fehmarn, Schleswig-Holstein, Sept. 27, 1867, a son of Matthias and Catharina Ehler.  He received his education in the public schools of Germany and in 1883 he started out to seek his fortune in the new world.  He landed in America and worked for two years in Jackson county and then removed to Ida county, but after following the same occupation there for three years he came to Crawford county where he hired out for two years longer.  At the end of that time he had acquired the necessary means to buy an eighty-acre tract, where he engaged in general farming and stock raising; this 80 acre farm has grown till at the present time he owns 2100 acres of Iowa land.  On Sept. 27, 1889 he was united in marriage to Miss Dora Suckstorf and to this union four children were bor
In 1889 when the Chicago & NorthWestern railroad was built throught Schleswig, Mr. Ehler started in the buying and selling of stock.  In the spring of 1901 he quit farming and moved to Schleswig, where he has since lived.  During the 27 years he lived here he has been steadily engaged in the live stock and real estate business, and has handled more live stock than any other buyer in this vicinity.  He has served as director of the Farmers State Bank since the organization of that institution.

He is survived by his wife Mrs. Dora Ehler; three children, Clara, Mrs. Emil Maas, living just north of Schleswig, Edward, at home and Edna, Mrs. L. D. Johns, also of this city; two grandchildren, Dorothy Ann and Harris John Maas; three brothers, Julius of Schleswig and Ludwig and Richard of Ida Grove and one sister, Mrs. Mathilda Scheel of Germany.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, May 13, at 1:30 in the house and at 2 o'clock in Friedens Evangelical church.  Burial in Morgan township cemetery.

Emma Dorathea Ehler
August 30, 1945
The Schleswig Leader (Schleswig, Iowa)

One of Last Pioneers Passes Away; Funeral Held Tuesday

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Friedens Church for Mrs. John Ehler, who died Saturday.  Rev. A. F. Rinne was in charge of the services.  Burial was made in the Morgan cemetery.

Mrs. Emma Dorathea Ehler, nee Suckstorf, was born April 25, 1869, at Davenport, Iowa; and entered into her eternal rest August 25, at the Carroll Hospital.  She reached the age of 76 years and four months.  Mrs. Ehler submitted to a serious operation on August 20, but due to her advanced years was unable to bear the shock.

At the age of seven she came to Crawford County with her parents, and settled on the farm north of Schleswig.  This was about twenty five years before the town of Schleswig was founded, and the surrounding territory was mostly prairie.  With her passing Schleswig bids farewell to one of its last pioneers.

She was united in marriage to John Ehler on September 27, 1889, at the Grant Township Lutheran Church.  Two sons and three daughters were born to this union.  After spending the first two years of their married life on the old Suckstorf farm, they moved to Ida County where they farmed for eight years.  In 1890, when the town of Schleswig was started they moved here to make their home.

Mr. and Mrs. Ehler, accompanied by their family, took a four month trip to Germany in 1907 and in 1915 toured the West.

In 1926, Mrs. Ehler lost the sight of one of her eyes, and in 1936, had the sad misfortune of losing the sight of the other eye.  Thus, for the past nine years she has been totally blind.  During the first several years she made her home with her daughter Edna, Mrs. L. D. Johns, and spent the last years with her daughter Mrs. Clara Maas.  During these years she tried to bear her burden without complaint and sought to spend her time in doing hand-work and helping where she could about the house.  She always tried to be cheerful in spite of her physical handicaps.

She was baptized as a child, for many years she was a member of Friedens Church and an active member of the Women's Union.  She like to attend church, but this was impossible during the past few years.  However, she always looked forward to receiving Holy Communion in her home and was privileged to partake of this Sacrament last Friday afternoon.

She was a devoted mother and a good neighbor and friend.  She will be missed by all who knew her.

Mrs. Ehler was proceded in death by an infant daughter, a son, Louis, who died at the age of 10 in 1900; her husband on May 8, 1928; and an only sister, Wihlelmina, Mrs. Lorenz Petersen in 1939.

She is survived by the following children; Mrs. Clara Maas, Mrs. L. D. Johns and Edward, all of Schleswig; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; besides other relatives and friends.

The pallbearers were, Walter Bugge, Martin Ehler, Fred Petersen, Charley Burk, and Alex Miller.

Relatives from a distance were, Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Bendixen of Cheyenne Wells, Colo., Mr. and Mrs. Herman Trede of Treynor, Iowa, Mr. and Mrs. Nick Suckstorf of Council Bluffs, Mrs. Hoff of Crescent, Iowa, Mr. and Mrs. Hans Greenwalt, Mr. and Mrs. Theo. Greenwalt and Mrs. Elmer Jessen of Battle Creek, Mr. and Mrs. John Ehler, Mrs. Katherine Harding, Mr. and Mrs. Jensen, Henry Ehler, Mr. and Mrs. Martin Ehler, Hugo Ehler, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Bugge all of Ida Grove, Fred Petersen of Arthur, Mr. and Mrs. Harwin Jess of Charter Oak.
