Mrs. William Harmsen Passes Suddenly
3-Day Malady Fatal; Leaves Four Sons, One Daughter; Rites Wed.

Mrs. William Harmsen, 63, well known farm resident just west of LaMoure, died at 12:30 a.m., Monday, November 18, following an illness of only three days from a suddenly developing throat infection.

Catharina Dorothea Wilhelmine Bossler was born March 14, 1877 in Strukkamp, Fehmarn to Nicolaus and Anna (Unbehauen) Bossler.  There she spent her girlhood and young womanhood.  In 1897, she immigrated to the United States to Meriden, Iowa and later moved to Pipestone county, Minnesota.  She married William Harmsen on March 15, 1898 in Pipestone and together moved to LaMoure county in 1915 and located on the farm a few miles west of LaMoure.

Mrs. Harmsen was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and was a member of the Zion Lutheran church of Grand Rapids, North Dakota.

Private funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon by the Rev. A. W. Raugust of Verona, pastor of the Zion Lutheran church of Verona.  Burial was in Rosehill Cemetery in LaMoure.

Surviving are four sons, John, Anton, Arnold and Herbert Harmsen; one daugther, Helen Harmsen, all of LaMoure; and five grandchildren.  She is also survived by one brother, John Bossler; and one sister, Mrs. Augusta Piehler, both of Hamburg, Germany.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two daughters and one sister.

Funeral Services Held Saturday For Mathilda Harmsen

Mrs. Mathilda Harmsen, 86, wife of the late John C. Harmsen, passed away Wednesday, January 6, 1971 at the Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan where she had been a patient since December 11th.  Mrs. Harmsen had been in failing health many years and had resided at the Salem Invalid Home in Elk Horn the past eight years.

Mathilda Dorothea Hanna Hansen was born February 29, 1884 on the Island of Fehmarn, Germany, to Georg and Emilie (Topp) Hansen and came to the United States in 1892, locating in Iowa.  She was married to John C. Harmsen at Avoca on January 25, 1905.  They lived in the Walnut and Hancock areas until his death on April 22, 1955.  She lived in Atlantic until moving to the Home in Elk Horn.  She was bapitized in the German Lutheran faith.

Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Lawrence (Ella) Andersen of Harlan, Mrs. Rosie Christensen of Atlantic and Mrs. Harlow (Lillie) Butcher of Norfolk, NE; two sons, Martin of Atlantic and Herman of Harlan; two sisters, Mrs. Kay Neibuhr of Davenport and Mrs. Anna Finnell of Albany, OR; two brothers, George Hansen of Davenport and Hugo Hansen of Glasgow, MT; 45 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, two sons, Emiel and Lawrence Harmsen, five brothers and four sisters.

Funeral services were held Saturday, January 9th, at 1:30 p.m., at Roland's Funeral Home in Atlantic.  The Rev. Axel Andersen of Elk Horn officiated.  Burial was in the Walnut Cemetery.

William Hartwig

William Hartwig Rites Held Wednesday Morning

William Hartwig, 306 Harry avenue, died at a local hospital Monday morning. Services were held Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock at Bethesda Lutheran church, with the Rev. J. Wild officiating. Pallbearers were Tobias Kaiser, Robert Kaiser, John Huebner, and Reinhold Krein. The body, in charge of the Memorial Funeral home was shipped to West Point, Neb., for burial beside his wife, who died in 1933.

William Henry Nicholaus Hartwig was born on the Island Fahmarn, June 22, 1865, and was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith there. He came to America in 1883, staying in New York a year, then going to West Point. He was an electrical contractor.

Mr. Hartwig came to Hot Springs in 1922, seeking relief from asthma. He is survived by three nephews, William Wiese of Uhling, Neb., Emil Wiese of Ainsley, Neb., and Conrad Wiese of Alameda, Calif. He was a quiet honest man.

Services for Emma L. Hawkins, 85, of 1800 E. Rusholme Street, Davenport, will be at 11:30 a.m., Tuesday at Runge Mortuary.  Burial will be in Blue Grass Cemetery, Blue Grass.

Mrs. Hawkins died Saturday at St. Luke's Hospital, Davenport.  Visitation is from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m., today at the mortuary.

She was a registered and surgical nurse employed at various local hospitals in Iowa and in Kansas City, MO.

Emma Laura Lafrenz was born November 23, 1903 in Todendorf, Fehmarn, Germany to Matthaeus and Dorothea (Voss) Lafrenz and came with her parents to the United States to Scott County.  She married James Hawkins in 1924 in Springfield, IL.  He died in 1963.

Survivors include one son, Virgil Hawkins of Kansas City, MO; one daughter, Mrs. Lee Fisher of Houston, TX.; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Otto Lafrenz of Long Grove, IA., and Herman Lafrenz of Davenport, IA.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two sisters and six brothers.

Hugo Hein

It was with sincere sorrow and regret that the people of Echo and vicinty learned the death of Hugo Hein, which occurred at one o'clock Monday afternoon at the home east of Echo.

Deceased had been a victim of tuberculosis for a long period of years and during the summer a decided change for the worse occurred.  On Nov.9, 1922, he entered the Riverside Santorium, at Granite Falls, in hope of securing relief, but his condition grew steadily worse.  In March he contracted influenza and failed to recover from the attack.  He returned to his home May 17, where he was cared for until the sad end came on last Monday.

Hugo Hein was numbered amoung our most highly respected citizens.  He possessed a kindly disposition, generous to a fault and was a man of sterling charcter.  He will be missed by a large circle of staunch friends and admirers.

Deceased was born on Sept. 15, 1881, in Burg, on the island of Fehmarn, and was 41 years, 9 months and 18 days of age.  He came to America in May 1897, and located in Scott county, Iowa, where he remained one year.  He then returned to his home at Fehmarn for a year after which he returned here and spent some time traveling over different parts of the United States.

In May 1902, he moved to the farm east of Echo, where he had since resided.

On July 19, 1905 he was united in marriage to Frieda Kock of Echo.  Three children were born as the results of this union, Joachim, aged 16; Herbert aged 15; and Jurgen, aged 13.

Besides the widow and three sons, four sisters, Augusta, Amanda, Minna and Dora and one brother, Max residing in Germany, the other brother Reinhold Hein, resides in Echo.

The funeral will be held from the M.E. church in Echo, at 2 o'clock this afternoon, Rev. Clement will officiate.

The Enterprise wishes to join the hosts of friends in expressing sympathy to the sorrowing wife and sons in their sad hour of affliction

Catherine Stortenbecker Heldt

OBITUARY OF MRS. KATHERINE HELDT
The death of Mrs. Katherine Heldt occurred at the home of her granddaughter, Mrs. John Schmidt, last Saturday morning, September 3rd. Mrs. Heldt was born on February 28, 1840 (actually 1837) in Fehmarn, Germany.  With her husband she came to America in 1884.
The year following her husband passed away, and for the past fourteen years she has been making her home with her grandchildren.  At the time of her death she had reached the age of 87 (90) years, 6 months and 2 days.  She leaves to mourn her departure one son,
Henry of Davenport, Iowa.  Three grandchildren, five great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren also survive her.  Funeral services were held from the John Schmidt home on Tuesday afternoon, September 6th, conducted by Rev. A.J. Evenson of Sherman.
Interment was made in the Jasper cemetery.

MRS. HERRMANN, DURANT, CALLED

Native of Germany, Resident of Community 40 Years, Summoned

Mrs. Johannes Herrmann, a resident of this community 40 years, died at 3:30 a.m., this morning in her home after a brief illness.

Friederike Maria Sophia Kruse was born October 27, 1859 in Burg, Fehmarn, Germany and came to the United States to Davenport, Iowa.  She married Johannes Herrmann on February 27, 1885 in Davenport.  He preceded her in death nine years ago.

Surviving are her step-mother, Mrs. Elisabeth Kruse of Durant, IA., two brothers, William Kruse of Marietta, MN., and Peter Kruse of Sunbury, IA.; one half brother, Henry Kruse of Durant, IA.; two sisters, Mrs. John (Catharina) Dau of Germany and Mrs. John (Elise) Petersen of Davenport, IA.; and one half sister, Mrs. Christian (Mathilde) Sohsen of Sunbury, IA.  She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one sister and two half brothers.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday afternoon at the home.  The Rev. H. A. Kossack will officiate.  Burial will be in the Durant Cemetery, Durant.

Julius Herrmann

Funeral services for Julius Herrmann, 87, were Sunday afternoon in St. John’s Lutheran church with Rev. David Rath officiating.  Burial was in the Randolph Cemetery.

Mr. Herrmann came to Pierce County, Nebraska in 1900 and had since resided in the McLean and Sholes communities.  He died Thursday, July 18, 1957 in the Osmond hospital, where he had been a patient several days.   His daughter, Mrs. Ray Sellon of Hugo, Colorado arrived at his beside Wednesday and two other daughters, Mrs. Louis Kruse and Mrs. Oscar Stueckrath were with him.

Julius Herrmann, son of Hans and Louis (Bockwoldt) Herrmann was born in Fehmarn, Germany April 28, 1870.  He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church in Germany, and on November 18, 1885 he came to America with his parents, brothers and sister, one sister remaining in Germany.  They settled at Durant, Ia., later moving to Denison, Ia., where he worked on a farm.  On January 26, 1897 he was married to Katie Riessen.  They came to Pierce County three years later and settled west of Randolph on a farm.  Four years later they moved to a farm east of Sholes where they resided 16 years.  From there they went to a farm west of Randolph were they lived until Mrs. Herrmann.  He had since lived with his daughters.  He was a member of  St. John’s Lutheran church. 

He is survived by fours daughters, Mrs. Ray (Louise) Sellon of Hugo, Co., Mrs. Louis (Hilda) Kruse and Mrs. Oscar (Lillie) Stueckrath of McLean, Mrs. Otto (Alma) Rakow of Bellingham, Minn.; brother, Henry, Beaver Creek, Minn.; 20 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.  His wife, and son, Harry, and a daughter, Goldie, preceded him in death. 

Pallbearers were six grandsons Waine and Marlyn Kruse, Duane Stueckrath, Capt. Donald Sellon, Raymond Rakow and Dale Kruse.

Anna (Clausen) Hollrah

Anna Hollrah was born October 22, 1897, the daughter of Christian and Elise Schoening Clausen. She died at the Dunlap Nursing and Rehab Center in Dunlap, Iowa, Saturday, December 20, 1997 at the age of one hundred.

Anna was born in Petersdorf, Fehmarn, Germany and was baptized in Christ on November 11, 1897 in the Lutheran Church in Petersdorf. In 1908, Anna immigrated with her parents and grandmother, Friederica Clausen to America. They traveled from New York by train to Charter Oak, Iowa, where they settled on a farm.

She was confirmed in the Lutheran Church, Charter Oak in 1911 and was united in marriage to Carl Hollrah in 1917. The couple farmed in the Charter Oak area for many years and were blessed with the birth of five children. In 1948, the couple retired from farming and moved to Charter Oak. Carl died in 1974 and Anna continued to make her home in Charter Oak, until entering the Dunlap Nursing and Rehab Center in September of 1996.

Anna was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Charter Oak, their Ladies Aid and the American Legion Auxiliary. She was a past member of the Charter Oak Band Boosters and several card clubs. She loved to bake and gave much of it to family and friends. In her past times she spent many hours tatting and embroidering in her home.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Carl; one sister, Edna Clausen; one son, Leland; two grandsons, Ronald Hollrah and Brian Hollrah; two great grandchildren, Nolan and Anna Winquist. Survivors include two sons, Vernon Hollrah and his wife Leona of Charter Oak, Donald Hollrah and his wife, Donna of Rogers, Arkansas; two daughters, Evelyn Mundt-Meyer of Sun City, California; Aldene Winquist of Kiron, Iowa; ten grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30, A.M., Monday, December 22, 1997 at the St. John Lutheran Church, Charter Oak, Iowa. Rev. L.C. Gebhardt and Vicar Kent Pierce officiated the service and graveside rites held at the St John Lutheran Cemetery, Charter Oak. Art Beeck provided the organ accompaniment for the congregational singing "I Know My Redeemer Lives!", "Just as I Am, Without One Plea" and "Beautiful Savior". Pallbearers were her grandchildren, Steven Winquist, David Winquist, Alan Winquist, James Hollrah, Dean Hollrah, Vern Hollrah, Anitra Koski, JoNel Mundt, Kent Hollrah, and Jane Lafleur. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Ladies Aid.

The Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak was in charge of arrangements.
