Rites Being Held Today for Mrs. William Jammer
Last rites for Mrs. William Jammer, who died Tuesday morning, May 26, will be
held this afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Congregational church. Rev. Ross
B. Harman will give the sermon, with Lockwood Funeral home making the
arrangements.
Mrs. Kenneth Wallace, orgainist, and Pierr Landman will provide music.
Burial is to be in Riverview cemetery with the grandchildren serving as
pallbearers.
Dorothea Kock Jammer, daughter of Fritz and Gerturde Kock, was born April 19,
1867, on the island of Fahmarn, off the coast of Germany, coming to this country
at the age of two. She was the only daughter in a family of eight
children, and her seven brothers all preceded her in death.
February 3, 1886, she was married to William Jammer. They moved to Rock
Rapids about 1910. Mr. Jammer died in 1936.
Eight children were born to the couple: August, Alma (Mrs. E. J. Doss), William
F. (deceased), Emily (Mrs. Earl H. Fisher), all of Rock Rapids; Loretta (Mrs. R.
M. Schutz of Rock Valley; Luella (Mrs. R. R. Julian) of Flandreau, S.D.; Dorothy
(Mrs. George B. Sauers) of San Gabriel, Calif., and Viola (Mrs. E. S. Larson) of
Joplin, Mo. There are also numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren,
nieces and nephews surviving.

OBITUARY
NICOLAUS JANSEN
Nicolaus Andreas Friedrich Jansen was born January 29, 1869 in Burg, island
of Fehmarn, Germany, to Franz and Anna (Bossler) Jansen. He received his early
education in Germany and was confirmed in the Lutheran faith at the age of
fifteen. The day after his confirmation, he and his parents sailed for America
and settled in Scott County, Iowa.
He married Carolina Ewoldt on January 8, 1896 in Scott County and the young
couple homesteaded in O'Brien County, until they retired to Hartley where they
lived for 32 years. Ten months ago his beloved wife died. In July, he sold his
home and went to live with his daughters, until he passed away on October 31,
1950, at the age of 81 years, 9 months and 5 days.
The couple were parents of six children. One son died in infancy and the
oldest daughter, Norma Holtz, died in September of 1944. Surviving are four
daughters, Mrs. Amanda (William) Trojahn and Mrs. Helen (Otto) Nagel, both of
Hartley, IA., Mrs. Anna Popp of Moneta, IA., and Mrs. Auguste (Jurgen) Baumgarn
of Ocheyedan, IA.; 16 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Mr. Jansen was the last in his family to go and was ready and willing to be
called home. He died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Anna Popp. He was
preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one son, one daughter, three sisters
and three brothers.
Funeral services were conducted Friday afternoon at 1:30 p.m., at Foley's
Funeral Home, Hartley and 2:00 p.m., at the Methodist Church with Rev. Raymond
A. Roloff in charge. Mrs. Ray Ihry of Moneta sang "Going Down The Valley", "In
The Garden" and "Asleep In Jesus", with Mrs. Harrison Pike at the organ, who
also played other appropriate music.
Interment was made in the Pleasant View Cemetery, Hartley. Pallbearers were
grandsons, Melvin Holtz, Maynard Holtz, Donald Baumgarn, Orlin Popp, Daryl
Burley and Marvin Rost. Dinner and lunch was served at the Otto Nagel home.
Relatives and friends attending from a distance were, Mr. and Mrs. Henry
Lehrke of Davenport, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Vrochta and Mr. and Mrs. Louie Baumgarn
of Lakefield, MN., Mr. and Mrs. Charles Baumgarn of Lake Park, Mr. John Baumgarn
of Sioux Valley, Mr. and Mrs. Chris Baumgarn of Chokio, MN., Mr. and Mrs. Louie
Jansen of Round Lake, MN., Mr. and Mrs. George Hacker of Benson, MN., Mr. and
Mrs. Harold Gorder and son Harvey of Hancock, MN., Mr. and Mrs. Fredrick Bunjer
of Arco, MN., Mr. and Mrs. Ted Lorenzen of Rock Rapids, Mrs. Marvin Jobes of
Bigelow, MN., and Mr. and Mrs. Hank Jansen and Mrs. Albert Serck, both of
Inwood.

Clinton Business Man is no More A. Jensen, Well Known Fourth Street Grocer,
passes Away Friday Night, after lingering Illness Face Cancer Cause Clintonite's
Death Had Suffered from Malady Since Last March - Deceased Was Member of German
Society and of Walhalla Lodge of Odd Fellows A. Jensen, the well known Clinton
groceryman, is dead at his home 411 Eleventh avenue, death having been due to
the ravages of a cancer on his face. The funeral will be held next Tuesday
afternoon, with services at the late home at 2 o'clock in the afternoon,
conducted by Rev. L. Seehase of the German Lutheran church. Interment will be
made in Springdale cemetery. Mr. Jensen has suffered with the malady which
resulted in his death since last March. For years he had been subject to a sort
of erysipelas, which came and went, swelling his right cheek. Last March came
what he and his relatives believed to be a recurrence of the erysipelas; but a
malignant cancer developed, which spread rapidly, consuming the unfortunate
man's face.

Rosine Gardine Wogens Jensen

Mrs. A. Jensen Miss Rosine Gardine Wogens, who passed away March 31, was born
August 16, 1844 in Toftum Island of Fohr. She came to this country June 4,
1871, was married here to Arfst Jensen, August 15, 1871. Nine children were
born to them, four of whom preceded Mrs. Jensen in death. They are, Marie,
Jeanette, Gustav, Adolph, John Meinart and Arthur Reinhard. He husban preceded
her in death December 21, 1907. Those left to mourn her passing are Oscar J.,
Arthur R., Rose A., Mrs. B. Bhonson and Mrs. G.J. Neumann, and four
grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday afternoon at 2
o'clock from the residence, 411 Eleventh avenue. Rev. A. Hein will officiate.

Dora (Beeck) Jepsen

Funeral services for Dora Beeck Jepsen, who died on March 1, 1965 at Schleswig,
Iowa, were held on Friday, March 5, 1965 at the United Church of Christ. Mrs.
Harlan Buffum and Mrs. Don Meyer sang "Nearer My God To Thee" and "Asleep In
Jesus". Mrs. Broder Petersen accompanied them on the organ. Rev. R. J. Ratzlaff
officiated.
Dora Beeck Jepsen, daughter of Fred Beeck and Margaret Lafrentz, was born on
October 28, 1895 in Fehmarn, Germany. She was united in marriage to Herman
Jepsen of Schleswig on March 2, 1916. To this union one daughter, Irene Abbe and
five sons, Fred, Victor, Edwin, Herman, and Vernon were born.
They farmed southwest of town. Mrs. Jepsen had been a resident of the Schleswig
area since 1913. She was a member of the United Church of Christ in Schleswig.
She attained the age of 69 years.
She is survived by her husband, Herman, their six children, two sister, Anna in
Germany and Mrs. Edward Jepsen, one brother, Fred Beeck, 29 grandchildren and
one great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Burial was made in the Morgan cemetery. The pallbearers were Robert Beeck,
William Jeschke, Fred W. Jepsen, Fred D. Jepsen, Alfred Jepsen, and Donald
Kuehnhold.

Elsa A. (Beeck) Jepsen

CHARTER OAK, IOWA, Elsa Amanda Jepsen was born July 13, 1905, the daughter
of Christian and Anna Lafrentz Beeck. She died at the Eventide Lutheran Home in
Denison, Iowa, Thursday, April 29, 1999 at the age of ninety-three.
Elsa was born in Burg auf Fehmarn, Germany and was baptized in Christ on
September 17, 1905 by Rev. Bielenberg and later confirmed on March 27, 1920 by
Rev. Schultz at the St. Nikolai Evangelical Lutheran Church in Burg auf Fehmarn,
Germany.
She came to America in 1922 and lived with her sister, Dora in Schleswig for two
years, before her marriage to Edward P. Jepsen on September 24, 1924 at the Zion
Lutheran Parsonage in Denison, Iowa by Rev. Frehse. The couple settled on the
family farm east of Charter Oak and later purchased a farm northwest of Charter
Oak. They remained living on the family farm until they retired and moved into
Charter Oak in 1970. Elsa moved to Eventide in March of 1993, due to failing
health.
Elsa was a devoted member of St. John Lutheran Church, Charter Oak, their Ladies
Aid and the Charter Oak Clubettes. She was a very loving and caring mother and
grandmother. Elsa enjoyed crocheting, working in her vegetable and flower
gardens and spiritual music. In her leisure time she enjoyed polka music and
socializing in a game of cards.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Edward in 1973, one
daughter, Delores in 1929, one great-grandson, Edward Jepsen in 1994, one
son-in-law, Bob Flink, one brother, Fred, and two sisters, Dora Jepsen and Anna
Heinrick. Survivors include three sons, Edward F. Jepsen and his wife, Dorothy
of Charter Oak, Arnold Jepsen and his wife, Florence of Schleswig and Freddie
Jepsen and his wife, Shirleen of Charter Oak; three daughters, Norma Henningsen
and her husband, Marlo of Denison, Leanna Hopp and her husband, Donald of
Charter Oak and Marjorie Flink of Lincoln, Nebraska; twenty-five grandchildren
and forty-three great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Lillian Beeck of
Denison; many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, May 3, 1999, at the St. John
Lutheran Church, Charter Oak, Iowa. Rev. L.C. Gebhardt officiated the service
and graveside rites held at the Morgan Cemetery, Schleswig, Iowa. Art Beeck
provided the service music of "Going Home" and "On Eagles
Wings" and congregational hymn, "Nearer, My God, To Thee". Those
serving as pallbearers were Christian Johnson Jr., Dan Henkenius, Dennis G.
Jepsen, Rodney Flink, John Jepsen and Troy Hopp. The family invited everyone in
attendance at the service to return to the church and join them in fellowship
and lunch, served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak was
in charge of arrangements

Gertrude Dorothea Johannsen

Mrs. G. Johannsen, County Resident Many Years, Dies
Mrs. Gertrude Johannsen, widow of Jurgen Christian Johannsen and a resident of
near New Liberty for many years, died at 1:30 p.m., Saturday at the home of her
daughter, Mrs. Arnold Lensch, one and one-half miles west of Blue Grass. Death
terminated an extended illness.
Mrs. Johannsen had been making her home with her children since her husband's
death. She was born October 19, 1865 in Sulsdorf, Fehmarn, Germany to Heinrich
and Catharina (Rossau) Plohn and attended school there. She was married to Mr.
Johannsen on November 26, 1884 in Petersdorf and several years later, the couple
came to this country, settling in Wisconsin. The following year they came to
Scott county and had lived near New Liberty until Mr. Johannsen's death.
Surviving are four sons, Daniel Johannsen of Maysville, IA., John Johannsen of
Appleton, MN., and Charles and Emil Johannsen, both of New Liberty, IA.; one
step-son, Henry Johannsen of Maysville, IA.; four daughters, Mrs. Arnold (Dora)
Lensch of Blue Grass, Mrs. August (Emma) Dierksen of Dixon, IA., Mrs. Edward
(Kate) Paustian of New Liberty and Miss Amanda Johannsen of Davenport; three
brothers, Henry Ploen of Hope, ND., and Carl and John Ploen, both of Durant,
IA.; three sisters, Mrs. Margaret Rahlf of Allenton, WI., Mrs. William (Bertha)
Ewoldt of Big Rock and Mrs. Fred (Anna) Boll of New Liberty; and 15
grandchildren. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by one daughter
and two sons.
The body was removed to the Runge mortuary and will be taken to the home of the
daughter, Mrs. Paustian, at New Liberty at 10 a.m., Tuesday. Funeral services
will be held there at 2 p.m., Tuesday, with burial in the New Liberty Cemetery.

Funeral services for Johannes "Jack" Johannsen, 79, a resident of the Appleton
area for 41 years, were held Monday at First Congregational church with Rev.
John Krueger officiating.
Mr. Johannsen died on his birth date March 1, 1968 following a stroke.
Pallbearers were Robert Bagaus, Lyndon Blomgren, Robert Gaulke, David Johannsen,
Donald Johannsen and Curtis Wagner. Interment was made in the Appleton
Cemetery.
He was born March 1, 1890 in Danschendorf, Fehmarn, Germany to Jurgen and
Gertrude (Plon) Johannsen and came to the United States with his parents to
Wisconsin, then moved to Scott county, Iowa and later moved to Minnesota where
he farmed for several years. His marriage to his wife, Anna Schmidt, ended with
her death in 1934. He was then married on June 5, 1946 to Mrs. Lulla Stevens
and they resided in Neveda, where he worked in a defense plant, until his
retirement. Since then they have resided in Appleton.
Survivors are his wife, Lulla; five daughters, Mary Lu and Connie Johannsen,
both at home, Mrs. Arnold (Nadine) Gaulke of Appleton, MN., Mrs. Kenneth (Courtnay)
Kezotell of Edmonds, WA., and Mrs. John (Phyllis) Nelson of Mankato, MN.; four
sons, Marvin and Charles Johannsen, both of Appleton, MN., John Johannsen of
Montana, and Douglas Johannsen of Monroe, WA.; four step-daughters, Mrs. Warren
(Lorraine) Dahl of California, Mrs. Ronald (Betty) Ronning of Nevada, Mrs.
Kermit (Virginia) Peterson of Minneapolis, MN., and Mrs. Robert (Ruth) Bagaus of
Appleton, MN.; three step-sons, Allen Stevens of Alaska, Dale Stevens of Las
Vegas, NV., and Chuck Stevens of Excelsior, MN.; two sisters, Mrs. Arnold (Dora)
Lensch of Iowa and Amanda Johannsen of California; one brother, Charles
Johannsen of Iowa; 52 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, one son, three sisters, four
brothers and one half brother.

Rites Today for Mrs. Jacob Johannsen
Mrs. Jacob G. Johannsen, longtime resident of Pipestone, passed away very
unexpectedly at her home, 605 3rd Ave. SW., on Thursday evening following
a heart attack.
Funeral services were held this Monday afternoon at two o’clock at St. Paul’s
Lutheran church in Pipestone with Rev. C. Langhans in
charge. The burial was in Woodlawn cemetery, and the
following acted as bearers: Roger Johannsen, Alfred Garlich, Claus
Johannsen Jr., Herb Paulsen, John Slane, and Donald Gilmore.
The Walz & Giese funeral home was in charge of arrangements.
Margaret Tanck was born on May 30, 1875, and was past 80 years of age at the
time of her death. She was born in Germany and came to
the United States with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John
Tanck, when she was seven years old. The family settled in Iowa, and came
to Pipestone county in 1894.
She was married to Jacob G. Johannsen on November 9, 1897, in Pipestone
county and the couple farmed in Sweet township until
1941, when they moved to this city and had since made
their home here.
Surviving relatives include her husband; five sons, Arthur, Faribault, Minn,;
Albert, St. Paul; Benhart, Shakopee, Minn,; Lou,
Tampa, Florida, and Carl N., of Pipestone; two
brothers, Lou Tanck, Norfolk, Neb., and William Tanck, Pipestone; three sisters,
Mrs. Emma Both, of White Bear Lake, Minn.; Miss
Gertrude Tanck, Los Angeles, Calif; fifteen
grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Note: Margaretha Dorothea Tanck was born at Petersdorf, Fehmarn.

Deadwood Woman Dies Following Lenghty Illness Mrs. Gertrude Ruge Jugler a
resident of Deadwood for the past 24 years died at 1:30 a. m. this morning after
a month's illness. The deceased, nee Gertrude Horn, was born on the island of
Fehmarn in the province of Schleswig Holstein, Germany on April 7, 1868.
She attended school in Germany, and came to the United States in May 1884 with
her parents. She was united in marriage to Frank Jugler in 1885 in Cherokee, Ia.
She has been a resident of Deadwood since 1920, the family home being at 37
Forest avenue. Her husband died February 22, 1924. Her daughter-in-law, Mrs.
Chas. Jugler, and daughter Charlotte, age 11, of Milwaukee Wis. were in Deadwood
at the time of her passing. A daughter, Mrs. Walter Martin, Chambers,
Neb., and a son Ernest Jugler and family of Gurnsey, Wyo. visited her during her
illness, but were unable to remain with her.
Surviving relatives include in addition to five daughters and four sons are
fifteen grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. The body is at the Buehler
and Wells funeral home in Deadwood with funeral services to be announced
later.
Note: Gertrude's father was Ferdinand Horn. Her mother was Anna
Dorothea Russmeier. She took the name of Ruge from her step=father Joachim Ruge.

Margaretha Jurgens Is Called By Death
Mrs. Margaretha Jurgens, pioneer resident of this section of Iowa, passed away
Friday evening, July 27, 1934, at 8:20 following a long illness at the home of
her son, Mr. and Mrs. Willy Jurgens northeast of Dysart. She was aged 89 years
and 16 days. She had enjoyed good health until four years ago, when she became
ill of a tumerous growth. During the past two years she remained practically
bedfast.
Margaretha Haberbier was born July 11, 1845 in Lemkendorf, Fehmarn, Germany to
Martin and Anna (Stender) Haberbier. She was bapitzed and confirmed in the
Lutheran faith by pastor Mattesen in her native land. On April 19, 1865 she was
united in marriage to Jurgen Jurgens in Petersdorf, Fehmarn. In 1904 they came
to America, locating at Clutier, Iowa. On October 7, 1906, the husband and
father passed away. Ten children, seven sons and three daughters were born to
this union, two sons and two daughters preceding the parents in death in
Germany. Following the death of Mr. Jurgens, Mrs. Jurgens lived with her son
Peter for a year and then made her home at Gladbrook, Iowa for some fourteen
years. For several years past, she has made her home with her three sons,
Rudolph, Nick and Willy.
The deceased is survived by the following children: John of Lucas, South Dakota,
Peter of Elkton, South Dakota, Rudolph of Buckingham, Iowa, Nick of La Porte
City, Iowa, and the daughter, Mrs. George (Dora) Wagner of Sherburn, Minnesota.
There are fifteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, other relatives
and many friends. Mrs. Jurgens was a good mother and neighbor and manifested
such a Christian faith and resignation to her God and Savior, even amid her
sufferings as is seldom found.
Prayer service was held at 1:40 at the Willy Jurgens home Monday and at the
Lutheran church in Dysart at 2 o'clock in charge of the pastor, the Rev. W. F.
Domres. The choir, Mrs. Hedwig Watts, Mrs. Arlene Oster, George Oster Sr., and
Edward Gleim, sang "Face to Face" and the requested hymn by the deceased, "Let
Me Go" with Mrs. Dora Hansen at the piano. Burial was made by the side of her
husband in the Oneida Cemetery south of Dysart.
Casket bearers were Marvin Jurgens, Irvin Jurgens, Claus Stricker, Harold
Jurgens, Wesley Jebe and Rudy Jurgens. Mrs. G. C. Thomas and Mrs. Thomas
Thiesen were in charge of the profuse floral offerings.
