Our trips to Fehmarn
Fehmarn Gift Shop

We've got places to go and lots to do today.  Up early, we were ready for our 6:30 a.m. pick-up and drive to Heathrow Airport.  Everything went according to schedule and by 10 am, we were in the flying above London on our way to Germany.

At 12:30 p.m., German time, we arrived at the Hamburg Airport.  Even with the security measures, all went smoothly and it didn't seem to take any extra time.  Heathrow Airport was supposed to be very big and England’s Busiest Airport, but we think our own Miami International Airport to be busier and more congested.

The only trouble we had in Hamburg was trying to find the Alamo car rental.  It's now National and located on the opposite side of the terminal than all the other rental agencies.   We got a small Opal wagon and found it in the parking garage without trouble.  Immediately, we went on our way looking for the Autobahn...... And looking....... And looking..... And looking!  Every year we get lost trying to get out of Hamburg, so why should this year be different?  We found another highway that connected into the A-1.  So, within an hour, we were on the Autobahn, driving towards Fehmarn.

The Fehmarnsund Bridge

Just after 3 p.m., we crossed the Fehmarnsund Bridge onto Fehmarn.   We drove directly to the apartment that we had rented from Achim Kühl.  Dropping off our luggage, we immediately went to the SKY grocery store before they closed early on this Sunday.  We ran around the store like children.  Hopefully the natives don't pay attention to us, because when we shop we get excited and talk a lot!!  John looks for his favorite items and I wander around looking for "interesting food items" while I occasionally pick up things we need for our breakfast, snacks and beverages.  We have a good time….. even in the grocery store!

Back to our small apartment, we set up our kitchen and unpacked our luggage at record speed.  John wanted to get to the Burg Church cemetery to look for new headstones and record them with photographs.

At the Burg Church, John walked around..... checking for new headstones.  We found Fritz Mackaprang, who died in 2001.  Fritz was the old gentleman that we met on our first trip to the island in 1999.  He invited us to his home and graciously showed us around to see his very, old family estate.  He had shown us his old family portraits, and furniture and old family possessions dating back to the 1600’s.  He was very prominent in his community and we were sad when we heard he had died.

While John took his photos, I walked around looking for flowers to photograph.  I like to photo the flowers close-up to use for screen-savers on my computer..... Like this one:

The cemeteries become such beautiful flower gardens in the springtime.

When we were finished, we went over to the "Jahrmarkit" in the large parking lot behind the main street.  This is an annual market or carnival-type fair.  When we drove into town, we noticed banners announcing this Carnival with promises of rides, games and food.

John and I had planned to find a nice restaurant for dinner, but the smells of the carnival food were calling to use.  And we had no willpower, so we ate sausages, garlic bread and corn on the cob for dinner.  A mobile dining room was set up behind each food wagon and we sat down and enjoyed our junk food dinner.  I purchase some candied nuts and other goodies, and we went merrily on our way..... Eating candy.  We were so BAD!!!!

When we left the carnival, we drove over to the local Internet Cafe to e-mail the family and friends at home.  We have used this small local bar with its 6 computers and pool table for the past 4 years and were very glad it was still in business.  We don't know what we would do if we found them closed.  I guess we'd have to try the telephones. HA !!  No one would hear from us for a week. With a 6-hour difference, pay phones are too frustrating.  Maybe we’ll try them later in the week....?.....

The Internet Cafe ......  our connection to America

Today was our traveling day...... a very slow day, but we were very tired after all the flying and driving.

Tomorrow should be a very good day, as we have a meeting with Pastor Jeager of the St. Johannis Church in Petersdorf for some Genealogy research.
