Monday  - Leaving Germany

John is always worried that we will miss our return flight, so he arranged a wake-up call at 5 a.m.!  Breakfast, provided at the hotel, was at 5:30 a.m.. And by 6:15 a.m., we were checked out and walking to the airport.  It was a beautiful, clear morning and we took our time with the walk...... as we were early for our flight.

Bye until next year

We went straight to the boarding gate, after the security pre-cautions of x-raying the carry-on luggage and checking our documents.  We arrived at the Hamburg Airport with more than an hour to spare, before our boarding time of 7:45 a.m..  We were a little concerned at 7:45 a.m. because there was no plane parked outside!  It had been delayed; therefore our flight didn’t depart till about 8:20 a.m.

Now John was really worried.  When we arrived in Frankfort, we only had about 30 minutes to find and catch our connecting flight to Miami.  The line at passport control was long and slow.  But after jogging thru the terminal, we found our departing flight.  People were still boarding, so we had made it with a few minutes to spare.  Lufthansa delayed our flight for another 15 minutes due to another connecting that was late. Our long flight home was smooth and uneventful, which is the way we like it.  This had been a very good trip.

Auf Wiedersehen
until next year.

A FEW RANDOM THOUGHTS ON OUR TRIP:

This year's trip was special for us, because we got to see more of the whole country of Germany.  The whole experience will be very memorable for me.  As for John, he received much help from old and new friends at both Archives.  He came home with enough information for his database to keep him busy with data entry for the rest of the year.  It was a very successful trip that will benefit this website.

Advice to first-time travelers.....

If you travel to Germany, or Europe from America...... take the time to research your trip.  This year I planned the side trips, by researching on the Internet.  Hotels, Flights and Rental cars can all be found on the Internet.  I spent the month before our trip, searching out the local areas and attractions of interest to us, before planning this trip.  We were very lucky as everything went smoothly... as planned.

Also,  if you plan to drive in Germany, learn your street signs and important words such as:  Einbahnstraße – one way street; Achtung – watch out; Eingang – entrance; Ausgang or Ausfahrt – exit.   The use of a good German-Engish pocket dictionary works well and is a very useful tool for the English-only speaking American.  Be sure to check the section at the back, which includes “Useful words and Phrases.”  Also, check out international street signs on this informational web site –http://travlang.com/signs/

Smart cars can park anywhere!

Cutest thing we saw on our trip was the Smart car.  This is a very small car with only 2 seats that we saw in the larger cities.  Those cars are no longer than other cars are wide!  We saw them parked in spaces that no one else could use….. and the were so adorable!
