Our trips to Fehmarn

Today, John and I flew out of Hollywood-Ft. Lauderdale Airport at about 3 p.m. on Delta Flt. 920. Although the flight was slightly delayed in leaving due to several planes ahead of us, the departure was very smooth. After about 2 hours, we arrived in Atlanta, GA on time. From there, we boarded Flt. 60 for Hamburg, after another delay of almost 1 hour. We ate dinner on the plane about 9:30 p.m. Poor John, he was so tired and we were only starting.

Germany is 6 hours ahead of our Florida time. John thought he would get a jump on the jet lag problem. His solution was to go to bed very early 3 days before the trip and get up very early each morning. He went to bed about 5 p.m. and got up at 2 a.m. This bothered him the second day, but by the third day, he thought he had this problem solved. On the plane, he was so tired waiting for his dinner, I thought he would fall asleep. The plane was noisy, and it was difficult for him to sleep. He napped and rested for several hours.

My solution was different. I started about 2 weeks before the trip. I tried to go to bed by 10 p.m. and get up at 5 a.m. for the first week. On the second week, I tried to go to bed by 9 p.m. and get up at 4 a.m. Also, my Dr. had recommended that I take Melatonin 3 mg for 10 days before the flight and during the trip. This is a dietary supplement that helps establish normal sleep patterns. I don’t know if it helped, but I was fine on the plane. When dinner came, I took a sleeping pill and got about 3 ½ to 4 hours of sleep on the plane.
